HALLOWEEN: COMPARING NYU AND COLUMBIA STUDENTS

Over 50% of Wharton students head to NYC after graduating. A large portion of these graduates works in the financial services industry and consulting. This projects aims to distill the recreational habits of Columbia and NYU students over the past 10 years. This information helps reveal and explain key trends occurring in the City.

STRUCTURE AND OVERVIEW OF ANALYSIS

DATA COLLECTION

The 2009 to 2018 Yellow Taxi Trip data was sourced from NYC Open Data. It consists of various fields, including pick-up and drop-off locations, trip distance, fare amount, tip amount, number of passengers, dates and times of pick-up and drop-off, etc.

I also collected NYC Restaurant and Bar data consisting of the name and location.

MANIPULATING AND ANALYZING DATA

After loading the data, I divided and filtered the data by year as well as by university (NYU vs. Columbia). I used k-means clustering to determine the Halloween-night hotspots, which I then mapped. Finally, I conducted statistical analyses to evaluate other differences that exist between NYU and Columbia students, such as differences in tipping.

REVIEWING RESULTS

To analyse the results, I used both my clustering algorithm as well as the one built into Leaflet. The results comprise of both differences between Columbia and NYU students and trends over time.
